Today the Government has introduced Ronan’s Law which brings in new measures to tackle knife crime. They are making it harder to buy knives online, sell knives to under 18s and are investing money so the police can more easily track knives being sold illegally on social media.None of this will bring back Ronan Kanda, who was tragically murdered aged just 16 by a ninja sword bought illegally online. However, the introduction of Ronan’s Law marks progress in the fight against knife crime and delivers on a lot of what Don’t Stop Your Future has been calling for. This is testament to the many years of hard work of families who have lost loved ones to knife crime, community organisations and anti-knife crime campaigners. And of course, the tireless campaigning of Ronan’s family. @justiceforronankanda To put an end to serious youth violence once and for all, we need to address its root causes such as social deprivation, lack of opportunity and restoring funding for youth services. We need to give our young people the bright futures that they deserve, rather than making them feel that carrying a knife is their only option. But much like banning zombie knives, machetes, and ninja swords, the introduction of Ronan’s Law is another significant step in the right direction. We @dsyfofficial ask the tech giants (Social media and Telecommunications) to match the Government’s efforts, by making a significant gesture towards the safety of our young people. We will continue to fight on.
