My #WomenCrushWednesday this week is Chilali Hugo, a volunteer with @MomsDemand in Utah.After the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Chilali, a mom with a young son, felt a calling to join the gun violence prevention movement and began volunteering with @MomsDemand. Chilali’s home state of Utah lacks every foundational gun violence prevention law and has high rates of gun suicide. So, in recent years, volunteers in Utah have put in extensive work to change their state’s culture around gun safety. For Chilali, that’s meant phonebanking alongside her fellow advocates as they urge their representatives to support gun safety legislation. It’s also meant championing @BeSMARTForKids’ practices to promote the secure storage of guns. Thank you to Chilali and the rest of the Utah @MomsDemand volunteers who are working hard to protect their communities. #WCW

“Do not put a period behind my son’s name—because my son is still talking, because his mom is still standing.” – Brenda Mitchell of University Park, Illinois, and this week’s #WomenCrushWednesdayTomorrow will be 20 years since Brenda’s son, Kenneth, was shot and killed just days after seeing her other son, Kevin, off to his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. Kenneth was 31-years-old with 2 sons and a third born just 30 days later. When Kevin returned safely after his tour, he gave up his military career to care for his brother’s children.Today, Brenda is a force for change. She has been a volunteer with @MomsDemand for over 10 years, where she has served as Chapter Leader for the State of Illinois, a National Trainer, a National Mentor, and a member of the Grassroots Leadership Team, in addition to being an @Everytown Survivor Network fellow. An ordained minister, she is also involved in multiple trauma and healing organizations including the Chicago based group Purpose Over Pain and leads a weekly Healing Circle Grief Support Group.Brenda’s work has been vital to the gun violence prevention movement both in her community and across the country. Julie Ort of Douglas County, Colorado is my #WomenCrushWednesday today. Julie is a @MomsDemand volunteer and a fellow with the @Everytown Survivor Network.Julie was 13 years old when she and a group of friends went to TP a stranger’s home as part of a slumber party prank. The homeowner responded by opening fire on the group of children, striking Julie in the back and immediately rendering her paralyzed from the chest down. Some in the community were outraged—though not at the shooter—but with Julie and her friends, even going so far as sending hate mail claiming Julie deserved to be shot and that they would have shot her, too. Now a paraplegic 13-year-old, Julie came to believe that, to some, her life was worth less than a gun.For the next 40 years, Julie remained silent about her shooting, fearful of those who valued their weapons over people’s lives. But in 2019, she joined her local Moms Demand Action group and later joined the Everytown Survivor Network, where she found strength in her activism and determination to end the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S.“Now, I relish telling my story and testifying at the state Capitol,” Julie says. “It makes me feel empowered—like I am finally fighting for my 13-year-old self and for others.”After years of rehab, Julie has regained significant function and is now able to walk with the assistance of two canes and a leg brace. Today, she is the leader of Douglas County Moms Demand Action, where she continues to grow her group while inspiring fellow volunteers and survivors to #KeepGoing in this movement. #wcw
