The Amazon may feel far away, but its fate is tied to ours. I’m proud to help bring @juma_xipaia’s story to life in @yanunifilm to showcase her work in protecting forests, culture and community in the Brazilian Amazon. These forests play a critical role in regulating the global climate through their vast biodiversity and are upheld by the Indigenous communities who have inhabited these lands for centuries. Their destruction by extractive industries isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a human one. Our goal is for #YanuniFilm to build powerful momentum behind Juma’s mission—affirming the sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples and recognizing the Brazilian rainforest, along with the megadiverse forests of Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as vital to the survival of our planet. In November when world leaders will gather for COP30 in the Amazon with an opportunity to pass two critical initiatives – establishing the Tropical Forests Forever Fund and urging countries to join the Intergovernmental Land Tenure Commitment – we hope they will honor Juma’s indelible words: “The forest is our mother; she feeds us even when we forget to thank her.”

🌍 Earth Day was officially established in 1970 to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems. Millions of Americans, including college students from across the country demonstrated in support of the planet. This spurred Congress to authorize the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, marking the beginning of the most advanced system of environmental protection in the world at the time. Earth Day reminds us that environmental stewardship is essential for ensuring a good quality of life for ourselves and future generations. The environmental issues of tomorrow will require innovative solutions today. As we celebrate Earth Day, we must acknowledge past achievements and the work that still lies ahead.#EarthAlliance #EarthDay2025 #earthday #thereisnoplanetb #april #earthpix #protectourplanet #earthmonth #instagood

Pope Francis was a transformational leader — not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism. He demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, most notably through his groundbreaking 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. This powerful document served as a clarion call for a fundamental shift in how we relate to the planet. Emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life, Pope Francis urged individuals, communities, institutions, and world leaders to unite in caring for our common home. His words helped catalyze momentum ahead of the global 2015 COP21 conference, ultimately contributing to the formation of the Paris Agreement.During the filming of my documentary Before the Flood in 2016, I had the honor of sitting down with Pope Francis for a conversation on the urgent need to address climate change. That experience was enlightening, deeply moving and thought provoking. In 2023, Pope Francis expanded upon Laudato Si’ with the publication of Laudate Deum: Apostolic Exhortation on the Climate Crisis. In it, he renewed his call for immediate and decisive climate action, reminding us that “we are part of Nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it,” and that we must not view the world from the outside, but from within.Pope Francis was one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of environmentalists around the world. May he rest in peace.Photos: L’Osservatore Romano

URGENT: This week the Australian government will decide the fate of Macquarie Harbor and has an opportunity to shut down destructive industrial non-native salmon farms, protecting the Maugean Skate. This shallow estuary off the Tasmanian coast is one of the most important places in the world - now designated as a #KeyBiodiversityArea - which means it’s essential for the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity. Help save the #MaugeanSkate (link in bio) and prevent the extinction of this unique species and protect this wilderness from destruction. @ausconservation @bobbrownfoundation

The sanctuary of the Aldabra Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site and critical habitat for wildlife, is being sacrificed for a luxury resort. Despite public outcry and scientific warnings, the destruction has begun and land is being cleared on Assomption Island. Take action to protect it at the link in bio. This is not just about ONE island; this is part of a devastating pattern of land grabs. Time and time again, precious ecosystems and local communities are silenced for profit. Aldabra, home to giant tortoises and 400 species found nowhere else, is now facing the same threat. We cannot let history repeat itself. It’s time to take direct action: call on the Seychelles government to stop the construction, and urge luxury hotel chains to opt out of this destructive project publicly. It’s easier than ever to take action - go to FriendsofAldabra.org (link in bio) now. Our collective action can protect #Aldabra before it’s too late!Cover image: @celinaxchien#FriendsofAldabra #SaveAldabra #ParadiseVsProfit

The Australian government has approved deforestation within the Jarrah Forest of Western Australia, clearing the way for the mining of bauxite, the main ingredient in aluminum. The mining company @south_32 is set to clear 9,600 acres of this old growth forest, which is home to threatened species like the Critically Endangered Woylie. This operation will destroy critical habitat for over 8,000 species, 80% of which are found nowhere else on Earth. While native forest logging was banned in Western Australia in 2024, clearance of native forests for mining is still allowed due to separate government policies that prioritize mining development over environmental protection. This new approval is in addition to South32’s previous deforestation, bringing the total area of Jarrah Forests cleared to over 38,000 acres. @rewild and @wild.ark stand to protect these towering ecosystems that are already at risk of climate collapse. ???? “The Tree of Knowledge” is a new sculpture by the American artist Beeple (swipe to discover this contemporary medium). The artwork is generative, meaning that it unfolds in real-time, and shares contemporary news feeds, global temperatures, etc. The gleaming aluminum box depicts a hybrid tree that shape shifts and invites viewers to become participants. The artwork was displayed at museum @pinacotecaagnelli last month and is now installed near the New York Public Library. Beeple has generously donated proceeds from the sale of this artwork to support large-scale land conservation and food justice. Overall, the sculpture will support the creation of 11 new permanent protected areas globally. The locally led creation of new Amazonia Indigenous protected areas is one project supported by the artwork. “Titling Indigenous lands and designating new protected areas are crucial strategies to safeguard the vital Amazonia ecosystem,” said Christopher Jordan, Latin America Director for @rewild.Efforts of this collaboration are facilitated by Beeple Studios and #ArtintoAcres, an artist-run environmental initiative. Conservation partners for the Amazonia project include the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Enterprises, and key Brazilian federal government agencies: the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples.Media credit: Beeple Studios, @beeple_crapPhoto credit: Andrew Snyder, @andrewsnyder87Brazilian partners:@iicaoficial@finatecoficial@mmeioambiente@minpovosindigenas@icmbio@funaioficial
