• I wanted to try styling my hair with “setting lotion foam” because I noticed my hair feeling dry with my gel product. This could’ve also been because my hair was dehydrated so I did a clarifying cleanse & deep conditioning treatment this day as well. Clarifying and deep conditioning make a real difference in the texture and health of my hair. I can’t recommend keeping up with those two things enough.• Typically I style with a “gel cast” which is great for sealing the cuticle so the hair shaft doesn’t swell at the first sign of moisture, but living in a dry climate I don’t worry about this as much as someone in a humid climate.• This video is my hair about 80% dry & I styled it with “setting lotion foam” after a “moisturizing lotion” of the same brand. I tend to stick to products within the same brand because they’re formulated to work together. I also opted to work quickly and not use the spray bottle to drench my hair as I usually do.• When I am styling my hair I do incredibly small sections especially as I get to the top half of my hair. A great way to think of this technique (if you are someone who is familiar with straightening your hair) is: When using a hot tool and wanting to get the best results you work in smaller sections. Use that thinking when you set your curls if you want your hair to be more defined and last longer. • • • I enjoy sharing my ongoing curl journey as it is a huge part of my personal brand and activism within the television and film industry. Wearing my hair natural, keeping it healthy, and contributing to the online community of #curlyhair knowledge and resources is my way of paying it forward. I remember growing up and seeing Moesha in her braids or Tia and Tamera with their natural curls. By the time I turned 19 I was done with relaxers and on my way to embracing my natural curl pattern. What we see, how it’s portrayed, how we internalize it and what access we have to information shapes us and future generations.

Belonging. My whole life I’ve wondered whether or not I belong. Throughout many contexts, the legitimacy of my belonging crippled my innate confidence. To “be longing” for anything is not in alignment with gratitude for the present moment. The definition of the word references property, possession, place and position. My ancestors were forced into belonging. In practicing non-attachment I know nothing is mine- no property, possession, place, position, or person. The things and people I believe are mine are illusionary. So, knowing nothing belongs to me, there’s no need to wonder whether I belong. {taken at @getlostdtla ????️}

Be predictable. A guy once told me that I was predictable. I immediately wanted to do something unpredictable, so I kissed him. Baller move on his part. Naive one on mine. I was 19… Don’t worry, I’m smarter now. And taken ????????I recently watched this cool base jumping video where the advice given to the jumper was walk to the edge, and BE PREDICTABLE. Something clicked in that moment. I have always been a fearless person. And it’s because I know how to be predictable. There’s nothing to be afraid of if everything seems as it should be. This is why kids do all sorts of dangerous things! They still believe everything will be as it should. They’re unpredictably predictable. In the past three years I’ve been searching and healing and rediscovering and pausing and in all of that I have felt lost and confused about who I am in a way I don’t enjoy because I expect myself to be wiser and more self-assured at this point. I look back at younger images of myself and admire her because she just seems so sure of who she is and what she has to offer the world. I’ve come to realize being predictable, making the plans, following through, being yourself instead of trying to be unpredictable is a key into fearless and vibrant living. The sun predictably rises every day, and we’re grateful for it. Then it sets as predicted, and it’s beautiful. The moon beams predictably and captivates us. My last season taught me to slow down, and this season is teaching me the value of predictability. Thank you @imashnguyen @jazzemakeup @marjthestylist for this shoot. You are all predictable in the most unique and delightful ways, which makes working with you so wonderful ????
