Brene Brown says that people are hard to hate close up.I find this truth more relevant today than ever.My one wish for all of us it to befriend the “enemy”.I like to assume that “the other” knows something I don’t.Even when it enrages me.I’m convinced we all have pretty good reasons to think the way we do.And I got to that conclusion not by looking into headlines but by looking deeply into people.By wanting to understand.And I now find myself loving and admiring people with excruciatingly different points of view than mine.I now find myself in the awkward position of not hating the other side.Because I don’t believe in the other side.I believe we all want similar things but we have different ways of getting there. I trust people.And that doesn’t make me naive, I know evil is real.I just don’t think is my neighbor. I can’t point at evil but I know it feeds off of hate and division.So I don’t play that game. I also know that if I want to change somebody’s heart, hating them and calling them names will not make it happen. And we have proof of that. I can’t tell you not to fear.But I think I can invite all of us to take a deep breath and ask ourselves is choosing to hate and reject is helping our cause, whatever that is. I’m no master, I know nothing. But I believe in the good things coming.I will always want to build a bridge.And I’m ready to build. Because I’m still here, I’m still me, and you too. Even more so if we stand on opposite sides. ❤️
