One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was their belief that my dreams, my voice, and my education mattered just as much as my brother’s did. And that belief in me gave me the courage and confidence to chase my dreams.Every girl deserves that same kind of support. But right now, millions and millions of girls are unable to go to school, or are forced into child marriages, or suffering violence and abuse—all closing off the opportunities they deserve. That’s why I started the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance at the @ObamaFoundation. We support grassroots leaders and organizations around the world who are nurturing the spark, talents, and dreams inside of every girl, from the South Side of Chicago to rural villages in Vietnam. I’m so proud that we have supported more than 265 grassroots projects in 50 countries and impacted more than 160,000 girls. Now more than ever, this work is so important—and we need you to be a part of it. This #InternationalWomensDay, I hope you’ll make a donation in honor of a woman in your life, whether it’s your mom, your sister, your best friend, or even yourself. We have the power to create a ripple effect by supporting the next generation of girls. Visit the link in my bio to learn more, and let me know in the comments about the women who inspire you!

Fun fact: I’ve been obsessed with ventriloquism since I was a little boy. This week on @imopodcasts, with the help of @teamcoco, my lifelong dream came true. Jury’s still out on whether Woody will make a surprise appearance at the Oscars. Our full conversation with Conan is now on YouTube or available on your favorite podcast platform.

Growing up in Chicago, I spent so many recesses jumping Double Dutch on the playground. That’s why I’m inspired by the work Ayana Haaruun is doing with @BlackGirlsJump, which we’re proud to support through the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance.Ayana also grew up jumping Double Dutch and knew that it was more than just a game—it holds a special place in Black culture and girlhood. She wanted to pass that joy and community on to the next generation, so she started Black Girls Jump. Today, she gives girls an outlet for exercise, for friendship, and for developing confidence and leadership skills. With help from the Girls Opportunity Alliance, Black Girls Jump was able to expand its “JUMP IN!” initiative and bring world-class coaches and dance instructors to more of its partner schools in Chicago. As #BlackHistoryMonth comes to a close, please consider joining us in supporting important work like this—and let’s keep celebrating leaders like Ayana all year long.

Our voice is one of the most important tools we have—and everyone should be empowered to use theirs. That’s why I’m so moved by the work Yvonne Welbon is doing with @SistersinCinema in Chicago, helping Black girls learn about media, craft their stories, and share them with the world.Decades ago, Yvonne was building a database of films by Black women directors. That work grew into her dissertation, a documentary, and eventually, into a nonprofit dedicated to elevating future generations of storytellers. The @GirlsOpportunityAlliance is proud to support @SistersinCinema’s Podcasting for Beginners training, which teaches students about the magic of audio storytelling. This #BlackHistoryMonth, I’d be so grateful if you would support important work like this through Girls Opportunity Alliance—just visit the link in my bio.

I’m so inspired by the leaders in our @GirlsOpportunityAlliance Network who are making a difference in my favorite city in the world: Chicago.Growing up on the South Side, Darryca didn’t have a mentor in her life—and she saw firsthand how important it was for girls to have mentors who understand their realities, saw their potential, and could help them reach it. That’s why she co-founded @FocusFairiesMentoring, which supports girls who often lack access to mentorship programs. She is especially focused on reaching girls who have experienced trauma or violence, and providing them with hope, healing, and sisterhood. Our Girls Opportunity Alliance was proud to help Focus Fairies launch Wings on Wheels—a mobile mentorship bus which travels to different neighborhoods to provide mental health resources, art workshops, and more. Throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, I’ll be celebrating leaders like Darryca who are helping us write the next chapter of Black history by empowering the next generation. Follow along, and if you’d like to support this work, you can join us at the link in my bio.

As a child, I spent countless hours trying to master the perfect backbend—so it was such a thrill to have Olympic gymnast @alyraisman on @imopodcasts to give us a candid look inside the world of gymnastics! She also bravely recounted the abuse that she and so many young athletes on Team USA suffered and why she felt so strongly about speaking out. Aly’s story reminds us what it truly means to be a champion: using your platform to lift others up. Watch now on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts.

I’m so proud of the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance Network—a vibrant community of grassroots leaders who are leading the charge for girls’ education and empowerment around the world. These passionate changemakers are working on some of the most pressing issues facing girls today. They’re helping girls pursue their education, from the bustling cities of Tanzania to the remote mountains of Nepal. They’re connecting girls in rural Kenya and India who aren’t in school to life-changing learning opportunities. And they’re working to remove barriers that prevent girls from going to school at all, like ending child marriage.Last fall, the Girls Opportunity Alliance brought together more than 50 of these leaders from 21 countries in Mauritius, where they had the chance to learn from one another and from experts in girls’ education. They dived into the latest research. They exchanged best practices to strengthen their programs. And best of all, they built lasting relationships with one another. I know that together, these leaders will set off ripples of change for years to come.As we celebrate #InternationalDayofEducation today, I hope you’ll consider joining us in support of their work by checking out the link in my bio.
