To my incredible hubby- and the best dad around- I’m so late in posting this, but for the past few weeks we’ve gotten the chance to celebrate being back together again as a family, as well as Father’s Day and our anniversary. I couldn’t do this life without my Peter. He is our rock. He is the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. ❤️❤️❤️ Here’s to many more Father’s Days and many more anniversaries! Peter and I stood outside last night weeping at the night sky over our house. Somehow we’ve been spared from the horror of these fires. We were close for days, on high alert, anxious and scared. And the threat has receded for now. We cannot comprehend the devastation of the loss surrounding us. 20 families just within our kids’ school community have lost their homes. Many more are still displaced. Same with our church community. My extended family lives in the palisades and The palisades is ash. The high school that many of the kids in our school go to is ash. I was unloading the albums that I’d packed into my car last night and I came upon a bridal shower toast from one of my best friends from college- and I broke down in sobs right there in my driveway. Holding a precious memory in my hands- one that I hadn’t read in over 20 years- that I never would have read again had we lost our home. I was struck with the acute pain of the reality of losing memories. Friends of ours left their homes with only the clothes on their backs. Friends whose lives are firmly planted in their physical communities have no community life to return to. No church or school or cafes. Though they may be physically safe, their community is now scattered and will never come together the way that it was again.My heart is throbbing at the unbearable loss. It’s not “just stuff”. It’s life lived and memories and community. It is unbearable. And also- the way the folks in this town are mobilizing to meet this crisis is full of piercing hope. I’m part of a group of girls who mobilized yesterday to donate and feed the folks on the frontlines. Donation locations are overwhelmed with the amount of donations pouring in. Our school friends are housing other school friends- our kids’ school is mobilizing, our church is mobilizing. The pain is beyond but the love is even greater. The night sky brought me to my knees last night. Beauty in ashes. Hope in pain. Pray for Los Angeles. Pray for comfort in the midst of unimaginable loss.

Micah’s vision this year: 2 ranger characters from Dungeons and Dragons. Our names are Elowehan and Nest. Micah built his costume from scratch. He went to a fabric store to pick out fabric, then we borrowed a sewing machine from a dear friend and my mom taught him how to sew. He built every part of this costume from the cloak to the tunic to the weapons and props. Then he photoshopped us together in this awesome magical forest. Happy Halloween!
